Each pair of sentences clues two words:
- I found someone who competes at picking up very heavy barbells (WEIGHTLIFTER). He lifted a twelve-sided object—but it wasn't flat—it had three dimensions (DODECAHEDRON)!
- I found a small furry animal burying some acorns (SQUIRREL). It was burying acorns in the town where Wild Bill Hickock was killed (DEADWOOD)!
- I found a man who carried a letter of marque (PRIVATEER). He was unable to make use of it, because he was so sick he couldn't even get up and walk around (BEDRIDDEN)!
- I found a chain of islands (ARCHIPELAGO). And there I met Thomas, the star of Silicon Valley (MIDDLEDITCH)!
- I found a large gray mammal with horns (RHINOCEROS). A lady was riding it asymmetrically (SIDEDSADDLE)!
- I found the composer of The Rite of Spring (STRAVINSKY). He was playing some sort of droning Australian stick instrument (DIDGERIDOO)!
The second word in each pair contains three Ds. Check which letter in the first word is in the same position as the third D in the second word, and you'll spell the answer, FLEERS. ("Fleers," as the third person singular of "fleer," means "grins in scorn." As the plural agentive of "flee," it means "those who attempt to escape.")
