Each answer has an "impurity," an extra letter. The other letters anagram into a gemstone. (The crystal icons for each puzzle are supposed to resemble the corresponding gems, but, eh)
The extracted impurities spell out what Culex should do to his puzzle-crystals: HARDEN them.
