Day 17: Air

The Solution

The names in "53 Miles West of Venus" are craters on the moon. If you head west from those craters for the distance specified (I measured from center to center), you'll reach the craters Brenner, Ellison, Tycho, Theophilus, and Yerkes. The first letters of those names spell BETTY.

The string in "Big Bird" encodes "MUPPET WHO SANG LOVINGLY ABOUT BATHTIME COMPANION" by shifting the second letter of each word +14, then the third letter +18, then deleting spaces. The answer is ERNIE, and if you perform the same operation on that name you get EFFIE.

The words in "Mesopotamia" are names of cuneiform signs. If you find those signs and rotate them in the same manner as the names in the image, you get:

...which says KATE... kind of.

The clues on the left in "Rock Lobster" are for words that rhyme with "towel." (The line in the song is "Everybody had matching towels!" so let's match some stuff.) Violet Parr was played by Sarah VOWELL; a wooden rod is a DOWEL; Allen Ginsberg wrote HOWL; the star of the Thin Man movies was William POWELL; and the creator/host/EP/whatever of The X Factor is Simon le COWELL. Mark the cell in each row for the column headed by the right letter (V, D, H, P, C) to reveal the answer, WANDA.

All these sub-puzzles are themed after B-52s songs, and the names Betty, Effie, Kate, and Wanda all appear in the song "52 Girls." They are the 19th, 1st, 13th, and 9th names mentioned in that song, and from those numbers you are meant to get the answer, SAMI.
