Many of the objects in the game (the rubber mask, the cat, the newspaper) are not present as "red herrings" exactly, but to give you something to interact with. As you move around the map and try to interact with objects, you should notice that some commands are forbidden in certain places. Specifically, commands that contain a certain letter are not allowed in certain rooms. In intersections (with streetlights), all letters are allowed. So, note which letter is disallowed in each room. Streetlight locations are marked with an asterisk in the map below:

Several rooms have signs bearing graffiti. These are crossword clues for their streets, starting on the tile with the graffiti.
