See, my dad never developed the skill of playing text parser-style interactive fiction. But he likes my writing and he wants to enjoy my games. We got to talking about how he could enjoy them “vicariously” by reading transcripts. And if I were a reasonable person then at this point I would have said, “Okay, I'll make some transcripts of my games!” But instead I thought: How can I incentivize other people to make transcripts of my games?
Around the same time, Nintendo was celebrating the 35th anniversary of Super Mario by coming up with a bunch of “missions” for their fans, like “play this particular Mario game,” or “visit the Mario 35th Anniversary website,” and promising cool rewards to people who played along. And I thought: Gosh, I wish I could give people missions. I wish I was like Super Mario.
Let's say for the sake of simplicity that you have already joined club wooby. You don't have to fill out a form or create an account. I don't need that kind of hassle.
I have come up with a bunch of missions for you. Some of the missions involve sending me a transcript of one of my games so I can show it to my dad and he can be proud of me. Other missions involve completing a certain objective or “achievement” in one of my games.
When you complete missions, you are awarded with points. But in club wooby we call the points “buttons.” I will keep track of how many buttons everybody has using a spreadsheet.
Then you can redeem your buttons for prizes!
club wooby is just for fun. It is in no way a profit-making venture. However, I feel like I should take this opportunity to honor the monetary support that fans of my games have extended via Patreon over the years. If you're a Ryan Veeder Patreoneer, every dollar pledged via that service will count as one button in your club wooby account. This applies retroactively, so if you've been a Patreon supporter for a long time, you probably have quite a few buttons racked up already!
I can't fulfill physical rewards right now, WHOOPS
Complete one of these missions by playing a game and sending me a transcript! Please send it as a PDF file, even if it's just a PDF of unformatted text. (I realize I'm not in a position to be picky about the content and format of your transcripts, but I have some suggestions that I hope you'll look over.)
After I receive a transcript for a given game, I will eventually getting around to removing that mission from this list. So don't delay!
To embark upon an in-game mission, you'll first have to activate “wooby mode” by entering the command >WOOBY MODE in the game. Then, when you complete the mission, the game will provide you with a password. Send me the code and I'll credit the buttons to your “account,” by which I mean, your row in the spreadsheet.
